The paper contains the materials of the discussion held at the section «(Not)Ideal Anthropologist in Applied Research: Dilemmas, Expectations, and Responsibility» of the Conference of Young Scientists (December 3–5, IEA RAS, Moscow). The participants of the section discuss issues related to the professional identity of an anthropologist in applied research, which often forces the researcher to balance between conflicting ethical obligations, methodological standards, and pragmatic limitations. The discussion demonstrates the diversity and complexity of the applied field in modern Russian anthropology, the lack of consensus on the issues discussed, and detects the most problematic aspects of the topic. The published materials are accompanied by an introduction and conclusion from the organizers of the section, which describe the context and summarize the discussion.
